"Don't take it personally if people at work don't remember your name right away," said Cindy Lee, 26, a recent graduate of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. "Workplaces move through too many lives for the brain to track them all."
"It was one of my first part-time jobs at a supermarket," recalled Lee about her first work experience. She worked alongside colleagues in their 50s and 60s, who repeatedly forgot her name. "One day, a colleague I had worked several shifts with completely forgot my name and had to ask someone else. My first thought was, Seriously? We've worked together for weeks. I felt a little annoyed and embarrassed at the same time."
Lee is hardly alone in that experience.
For nearly a century, popular culture has instructed us to view this kind of forgetting as an administrative defect or a moral lapse. Dale Carnegie's 1936 classic How to Win Friends and Influence People, which sold over 30 million copies, presents an uncompromising premise: "Remember that a person's name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language." To fail to supply that sound is, in the Carnegie paradigm, a failure of leadership and character.
The cognitive assessment and brain-training market—valued at $6.9 billion in 2025 by IMARC Group—consists of apps such as Lumosity, Elevate, Peak, and CogniFit that have built businesses on the promise that memory and attention can be strengthened through daily digital exercises. However, the science is contested: Lumosity's maker paid the Federal Trade Commission $2 million in 2016 to settle charges that it advertised cognitive benefits it could not substantiate.
A number of cognitive science studies, however, suggest that the self-help industry premise—the belief that forgetting a name is a malfunction to be trained away—is completely backward. A senior leader who forgets your name on Wednesday is not cold, nor is their brain malfunctioning. They are simply operating a memory system that is running exactly on its own terms, behaving as the theory predicts it should.
In a seminal 1991 paper published in Psychological Science, cognitive scientists John Anderson and Lael Schooler argued that human memory is not built to preserve every piece of information equally. The brain has limited capacity, so it must constantly estimate which pieces of information are likely to be useful again. It does this largely through two signals: recency and frequency. Have I needed this information recently? Have I needed it often?
If the answer is yes to both questions, the memory stays accessible. If not, it becomes harder to retrieve.
That is why a new coworker's name is so easy to forget. “The forgetting of a new person's name and face is, in itself, entirely natural,” says Kwang Mee Lee, a cognitive researcher. A single introduction, particularly, may be inadequate for our brains to register it as important. On Monday morning, someone's name may enter your mind alongside a flood of other information, such as project deadlines, meeting times, Slack messages, seating arrangements, passwords, and other new faces. Unless their name appears again soon, the brain has little reason to keep it near the surface.
Anderson and Schooler's larger claim was that this forgetting is not a flaw but an adaptation: if memory tracks recency and frequency, it should mirror how often information actually shows up in the real world. To test whether human forgetting matches how often the environment makes available particular information, they mapped this memory decay against three real-world environments: the frequency of words in The New York Times headlines over two years, the distribution of senders in a daily email inbox over five years, and the languages spoken by parents to children.
The results lined up. The rate at which words showed up less in each environment aligned with the forgetting curve documented in decades of memory experiments, the rate at which the odds of recalling an item declined over time. When an acquaintance stops emailing you, your brain adjusts accordingly. Memory, Anderson and Schooler concluded, is tuned to how frequently information appears in our surroundings.
Working memory makes the forgetting problem worse. In a landmark 2001 paper in Behavioral and Brain Sciences, psychologist Nelson Cowan established that human working memory can hold only about four distinct chunks of information at a time. For instance, try repeating a Korean phone number, 010-3729-5038, without rehearsing it aloud while someone asks you another question. Most adults lose from three to five of the digits.
A name is just one more chunk competing for those few slots. If a manager hears your name while walking through a busy office, answering a supervisor, and thinking about an upcoming client call, the name may never settle into long-term memory. The conversation moves on, and the brain clears space for whatever feels more urgent.
The modern office moves people through far more relationships than the brain evolved to track. Anthropologist Robin Dunbar has argued that human cognitive capacity is optimized for ancestral group sizes of roughly 150 individuals. A large office pushes well past that, through hundreds of weak ties. The brain's default bet—to let unrepeated names slip away—remains correct on average.
"I genuinely forget more than 70 percent of the names," said Sam Han, 56, CEO of Quantum Admissions, a college admissions consulting startup. Han, a consultant himself, meets more than 1,000 clients and partners each year. "Because of that, I make it an absolute rule to record our consultations and use AI tools to generate formal meeting notes. If a meeting is scheduled months later, I study those notes thoroughly before walking into the room." Han's reliance on external tools is a reminder that memory often needs help.
Overcoming the brain's tendency to discard an unrepeated name requires deliberate effort. If you want a colleague to keep your name accessible, you have to create frequent, low-stakes occasions for them to use it.
Jayeon Yu, a 19-year-old sophomore at Georgetown University, notes that consistency operates as a manual override on an office's collective amnesia. "Always greet the person when you see them," Yu said, "because from my experience, consistency has kept me in their memory, thus my name."
But Lee encourages young people to understand—and accept as inevitable—their needs to be remembered at work. “A junior employee's desire to have their face and name remembered is, at its core, a survival instinct: the desire for social recognition in order to advance more quickly and stand out in competition,” she said, suggesting that a junior employee’s wanting to be remembered is as natural as a senior leader forgetting their name.
To fulfill their desire for their name to be remembered, Lee recommends not seeking being remembered exclusively from another person: “To become a meaningful person to someone, the key is to think carefully about what value you can offer them and to calibrate both the frequency and intensity of that stimulus accordingly.” She added, “Memory is not something the other person unilaterally grants you; it is something co-created by the frequency and continuity of meaning you yourself generate.”
Lee puts it more bluntly: the brain isn't neutral about which new faces it keeps. "The brain calibrates memory strength based on how much a new employee might help them and how long they might work together," she said. "We filter who gets carried into long-term memory based on the future value that person represents to us."
In other words, having your name remembered matters immensely for your career. But what matters equally is for junior employees to remember that their senior colleagues are managing an unprecedented informational load with an architecture built for a simpler world.
"Looking back, I don't think it was really anyone's fault," Cindy Lee said, after having worked for years now. "People at work who forgot about my names worked with a lot of people, and I was just one of many. Focus on being friendly, reliable, and doing your job well. They will remember you eventually."
